SUMMARY:Total Immersion Days (TID)
DESCRIPTION:Total Immersion Days (TID) program is an annual program conducted by the English Department of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. This program is to furnish the students with the opportunity to make use of their English in an immersed environment through the programs. With this program\, it is also expected that students broaden their cultural\, ethical\, and professional horizons. \n\nAs teacher candidates of English\, the English Department students are expected not only to be able to speak English fluently\, but also to be able to communicate well with people coming from different cultural backgrounds. Throughout the activities\, the understanding of various cultures supported by the knowledge of ethics is expected to be put into practice in the real life situation.\n\nAs the participants are the sixth semester students who are going to proceed to the last year of their study\, this program is also designed to expose them with various job opportunities. As some of the graduates of the English Department of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education might not be teachers\, they should be aware of various job opportunities of non-teaching fields\,  such as in tourism\, hotel management\, and commerce. The committee has decided upon the theme of the 2016 Total Immersion Days Program: “Go Hard or Go Home”.\n \nTotal Immersion Days Program has the following objectives:\n\nGiving the students the chance to speak English in a natural and daily setting.\nBroadening the horizon of the students about arts and culture of the speakers of English by giving them opportunity to encounter people from other nations and cultures.\nGiving the students the opportunity to perform their creativity in English in the forms of arts: drama\, role play\, singing and games.\nExposing students to various job opportunities for English Department graduates.

SUMMARY:International Multicultural Festival
DESCRIPTION:The world nowadays is getting more and more globalized\, and contacts between people within one’s and off one’s boundary is getting more and more intense. To be able to communicate effectively\, even one’s near native mastery of a foreign language used in common is still insufficient without paying attention to meticulous items such as cultures. Meanwhile\, very few people are fortunate enough to be able to live in an international environment as to live with the foreign cultures. In order to provide the students both of the English Department and schools nearby\, the English Department is planning to organize an event called International Culture Festival and Celebration. \nThe English Department plans to invite the following international representatives in Surabaya\, the consulate or honorary consuls of these countries: Australia\, Belarus\, British\, China\, Denmark\, Germany\, India\, Japan\, Korea\, Malaysia\, the Netherlands\, the Philippines\, Russia\, Slovak Republic\, Sweden\, and USA. \nObjectives \nThe objectives of the International Culture Festival are: \n\nGiving the students the cross-cultural knowledge as well as growing their cultural awareness\nBroadening the horizon of the students about international arts and culture of the world by giving them opportunity to encounter people across nations and cultures.\nGiving the students the opportunity to know international cultural communication\, national outfit\, arts\, cuisine\, songs\, dances\, and possibly games.\n\nAt the end of the day\, the participants are expected to be able to know and communicate well with people coming from different cultural backgrounds. Throughout the activities\, the understanding of various cultures supported by the knowledge of ethics and nationalities is expected to be put into practice in the real life situation.

DESCRIPTION:In Spain\, there are not many long periods without holidays. Even in the months that seem void of holidays\, such as between Christmas and Holy Week\, Spaniards find a reason to celebrate: Carnival. The Carnival in Spain is full of smiles and fun\, where you may run into superheroes\, medieval knights\, pirates\, clowns or zombies as you walk through the street. \nCarnival in Spain is known for its vibrant costumes and masks; although the Carnival celebration in Spain is not as esthetically beautiful as in Venice nor as over the top and dance orientated as in Brazil. It is a charming event in which people of all ages participate and enjoy\, even those with little resources. The event allows people to dress up\, change their identity and feel freer than during the rest of the year. Participants dress according to their possibilities and imagination and take to the streets to celebrate both night and day; crazy days in which nothing is what it seems and anyone can become whoever or whatever they have always dreamed about being. \nCarnival originated from a Roman celebration and extended throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. It can be traced back to Lent. \nThe Carnival ends on Ash Wednesday with the The Burial of the Sardine tradition\, a parody of a funeral in which a big fakr sardine is buried\, symbolically marking the farewell to life’s pleasures and the arrival of Lent. \nWe are going to perform a small approach about the Spanish Carnival is here on Widya Mandala Kalijudan conducted by the English Department into the Auditorium. It will be held here on Wednesday\, 30th March at 12:00 p.m; Coinciding with the end of the exams. \nWe encourage you to celebrate it with us\, dress up about something you fancy\, bring some food and participate on the contest preparing some dance\, song\, or display for around 1 minute in one of our two categories (individual/couple or in a group of 4/5 persons at least) there will be great prizes\, music\, English language\, and too much fun. \nORIGINALITY AND CREATIVITY WILL BE REWARDED \nCome and enjoy the party!

DESCRIPTION:WORLD-CLASS MATHEMATICS\nA 21st Century Learning Approach \n“Singapore Mathematics” is globally acknowledged as one of the most effective method of teaching mathematics in schools\, simply because Singapore students have consistently performed extremely well in International Assessments such as TIMSS and PISA. \nOne key factor is the way mathematics are being taught in the classroom. In this seminar held by the English Department\, Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya\, Dr. Yeap will share with teachers the effective methodology framework and examples of application of this methodology in class. Dr. Yeap will share insights on how the CPA Approach\, Bar Modeling\, etc. are effective approaches to develop effective problem-solving skills among primary school children. \n Speaker: Dr. Yeap Ban Har \nAs an experienced educator\, Dr. Yeap Ban Har spent ten years at the National Institute of Education\, Singapore\, where he was involved in several funded research programs in mathematics education\, and Mathematics and Curriculum Studies in Primary and Secondary Maths.
