The Holy Mass of Christmas

The Campus Ministry is holding the Holy Mass to celebrate Christmas. The mass is open to all students, faculty, and staff.

Students Academic Report

Students’ academic reports submission and KRS (study planning) consultation with academic advisors.

Online KRS and KRS Revision

Courses registration for the coming even semester can be done online. The Multi Media Laboratory is open to facilitate students to do the KRS in campus. The results of KRS will be announced to students later on that day. Should you drop any subjects, kindly do the revision on Monday, January 18.

English Club

Every semester the English Club organizes different events and provides its members with public speaking opportunities. The events may include fun discussion on various topics, individual and group presentations, and field trip to different places.

English Tutorial Program

English Tutorial Program is a community service activity organized by the English Department students by giving free English lesson to children who live near campus Kalijudan. The program is conducted regularly in every semester.

Green Living

Games and Activities that make it fun to live and learn green. The students together with the community are doing tree planting to sustain a healthy environment.

    Self-Access Centre (SAC)

    The Self-Access Centre (SAC) fosters students’ self-directed study strategies to supplement in-class learning, particularly in mastering English grammar. Students study independently choosing from various resources available in the SAC

    Students and staff are also welcome to use SAC rooms specifically designed for different types of learning activities (Tutorial Room, Reading Room, Discussion Room, Audio-Visual Room and Movie Room). To facilitate students’ learning, SAC counselors are always available for advice, tutorials and technical help.

    – Books for practicing grammar and building vocabulary, and for leisure reading and exam preparation

    Programs
    As an extension to independent study, tohelp students continue developing their language skills outside the classroom, SAC offers several educational programs, such as:

    Individual Tutorial Program and Enrichment Sessions
    These programs provide students with tutor or instructor guidance for completing enrichment and remedial exercises for Structure courses.

    Speaking Club
    The Speaking Club is held regularly providing opportunities for students to apply their English oral proficiency through various creative, fun, and enjoyable speaking activities. Mini-excursions, language games, cooking tutorials and video-viewing are some of the activities done during club meetings.

    Cultural Celebrations
    To provide creative outlets for language practice and to get immersed in the spirit of both eastern and western cultural celebrations, the SAC organizes festive events for students to join, such as:
    – Toy Story Easter Celebration
    – SAC’s Spooktacular Halloween Celebration
    – Thanksgiving Feast and Food Decorating Competition
    – Secret Santa
    – Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day Celebration (Month of Love and Prosperity)
    – Recycled Easter Ornaments Exhibition

    Interactive Board and News of the World
    As a means of visual reinforcements and peripheral learning, SAC’s Interactive Boards includes articles, facts and interactive activities, such as riddles, trivia questions or puzzles, posted on the bulletin board for students to read. To get acquainted and updated with current or upcoming events happening worldwide, students can enjoy reading SAC’s regularly posted News of the World.

    The Indonesian Early Chilhood Development Partnership

    The Indonesian Early Childhood Development collaboration between Widya Mandala Catholic University, represented by Faculty of Teacher Training and Education and Faculty of Psychology, and Vancouver Island University, Canada (formerly Malapina University College) Malaspina began in 2001.

    The purpose of the project is to develop a culturally relevant, quality, accessible, and sustainable post secondary ECD Program that meets the educational needs of professional and volunteer caregivers, working in community social service programs in Surabaya. The ECD program is expected to have a direct positive impact on the education and development of young children.

    The project delivers 5 courses
    – Course Guiding & Health of Young Children delivered April, 2006
    – Course Planning Programs for Young Children delivered May, 2007
    – Course Play Curriculum delivered May, 2008
    – Curriculum Enhancing Relationships with Families to Support Healthy Child Development delivered June, 2009
    – Course Advanced Guiding and Planning delivered May 2010

    An international conference was held on the last year of the project. The conference was attended by child educators, teachers, caregivers, and volunteers in child centres.
    The partnership still continues until now. VIU regularly send lecturers to give workshops for Indonesian child educators and students to to do practicum in several child centres in Surabaya.

    English Training for Nurses

    The English Department, in collaboration with Rumah Bahasa Pemkot Surabaya, is holding an English training for nurses. This program is conducted in Rumah Bahasa to help nurses develop their English competence in welcoming the Asian Economic Community (AEC) which begin at the end of 2015. There are 5 classes altogether with around 20 nurses in each class with one lecturer from the English Department as the language tutors.

    Curriculum Development Partnership

    The curriculum team from the English and Physic Deparments, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, develops a national plus curriculum for grades 1-6 of Olifant Primary School Yogyakarta. The curriculum developed covers the Indonesian national curriculum and  international curriculum taken from NCCA and Cambridge curriculum. The partnership started in 2010.

    English Today – Radio Program

    Logo-English-TodayIn collaboration with “She Radio”, the English Department is making a program called English Today which launched on December 22, 2014. The program itself discusses English words, phrases, expressions which are commonly and frequently used by Indonesian people. It provides a short explanation about their meanings, correct pronunciation, and appropriate use in daily communication. English Today on air 10 times each day within a week and the materials shuffled daily. This program is a useful resource for the community in using English words, phrases, and expressions correctly.

  • Pilar Keluarga  & Kopi Malam

    In collaboration with Radio Republik Indonesia Surabaya, the English Department and Early Childhood Education Department of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education work on two different talk shows, “Pilar Keluarga” and “Kopi Malam” in RRI Programma 1.  The two talk shows are broadcast monthly discussing various current topics.

    Broadcast on every Friday the first week from 15.00 – 16.00, “Pilar Keluarga” focuses more on family related issues covering parenting styles, bilingualism or introducing a foreign language to children, creativity, and learning styles. “Kopi Malam” broadcast every Thursday the third week from 20.00 – 21.00. Discusses current topics related to education. The topics include overseas scholarships, government policies in education, and English learning.

Welcome to Our Website

The English Education Study Program is the second oldest study program after the Physics Education Study Program. Since its establishment in 1962, this study program has produced more than 2500 graduates many of whom pursue their career path in the field of education. In our study program, we do not just produce teachers, but teachers with added values. With our ever changing in the job market, we are adapting our curriculum with the ever-developing challenges.

We are producing teachers with the ability of:

  • Teaching English it at elementary, junior high, high school, general and adult levels.
  • Teaching English to children (Teaching English to Young Learners).
  • Administering formal education institutions (schools) and non-formal education institutions (English courses) and other businesses in education.
  • Creating computer-based English teaching program (CALL).
  • Working as a translator, interpreter, copy writer, and editors.

Besides pursuing career in the field of education as teachers or English course owners and managers, the graduates, with their excellent English proficiency, are also able to have career in the field of banking, export import staff, tourism, and journalism, etc.
